Pirates in Historical Fiction and Nonfiction: A Twin Text Unit of Study
I thought this article was interesting. I liked the idea of combining fiction and nonfiction. I think the book: The Journal of Jake Carpenter would be a very interesting book to read for students and adults. This article was very helpful in understanding how to begin a pirate lesson and it also included books that I think students would enjoy.
Swashbuckling Adventures on the High Seas: Classroom Activities for a unit on pirates
I thought this article was interesting too. I like the different ways of recording information. It’s easy to understand and sounds fun. I think students w
ould enjoy making a “wanted” poster. This activity would give the children a chance to learn about several pirates, have fun, and show their creativity.
Internest Workshop and Blog Publishing: Meeting Student (and Teacher) learning Needs to Achieve Best Practice in the 21st Century Social Studies Classroom
I think technology is important and teachers should coporate it in their lessons. Technology can make learning interesting and fun. I think students would enjoy seeing their work posted on a blog and they would also have fun looking at their classmates’ work. Using a blog would be a great way to share class work with parents. Student also should use technology like the internet for research. Teachers do need to model the appropriate way to research a given topic. I have been a classroom where the teacher gave students information in folders about a certain event in history and they read the articles and found what they thought was important but also highlighted useless information at the same time. The teacher didn’t show the students how to find good information.
The Time Warp Trio: The Not-So-Jolly Roger
I thought this book was very cute! Students are going to love reading this book. It’s an adventurous
tale about three boys and a pirate (Blackbeard) I thought it was interesting that the boys find their adventures in a book. I hope my students can find their own adventures when reading. I think students will love this book because they can relate to the characters. In addition, the way Scieszka writes allows the reader to imagine exactly what is going on and also gives his or her the chance to be there as the action is going on.
I thought this was very interesting. I had no clue there were so many terms when learning about piracy. I thought there were just pirates! I learned a lot just about buccaneers while reading each website, however, some of the information was different from one website to another. I think this is an interesting project for students to do and I think the DRC would really help them keep information organized. The DRC will definitly reasearch easier. As an educator, I will have to monitor the sites I offer my students. I will need to look for inaccurate information like possibly some of the information found on the sites for this worshop.
What If You Met a Pirate?
and Pirate Diary The Journal of Jake Carpenter
I thought What If You Met a Pirate? was very interesting and easy to read. Before reading, I had it in my mind that pirates looked and acted like those we see on TV. I was
sucked into this book. I learned many new things about pirates that I had never even thought of before. Now I have a better understanding of pirates. They weren’t just men who drank and sailed the ocean all day. They had important jobs and all of the men were experts on their job. I know women were not known as pirates but, I think it would have been more interesting if Adkins added information about the few women that did take part in piracy. The Pirate Diary The Journal of Jake Carpenter was a very good book. I thought it was easy to read and students will definitly enjoy it. This book is about a boy from North Carolina who goes on a journey with his uncle. It gives great deal detail about pirates and a piractic lifestyle.

| “ I was eager to explore the ship, but before I could do this Will set me to wash the decks. He explained that they must be kept damp or the boards shrink apart letting in the sea.” pg.10 | I thought this was interesting. In movies with pirates you see crew members washing the ship but, I had no clue that there was a reason for doing that. |
| Part B What if You Met… | |
| “The stuff pirates stole what no all silver and gold.” pg. 22 | I thought this was interesting because I had always thought that pirates stole just silver and gold. They also stole: jewels, sugar, spices, food, cloth, indigo, tea and coffee, ivory, rum and wine, and guns and gun powder. |
| Section 2 Part A The Pirate Diary… | |
| Cause: The Greyhound came upon a ship that they that was friendly and they let the ship get close. pg.22 | Effect: The Greyhound came upon ship. They threw a jug onto the ship that spread gray smoke and they quickly board the ship.” That’s when Jake realized they were pirates. |
| Part B What if you met… | |
| One way pirates attacked was to sneak up on a ship at night as it sailed through a narrow passage, then swarm over the side of the ship. Another way was to put up a false flag to disguise the vessel. They may fly a flag of a friendly nation to fool other ships. pg.20 | I think the second method the pirates used to attack other ships is really a smart idea and it worked! |
| Section 3 part A The Pirate Diary… | |
| Friday 15th-“I spy a mermaid” pgs. 42-44 I know in movies there are mermaids, but I know in real life there aren’t and if this is a true diary then what could the “mermaids” be? | This mermaid turned out to be a manatee but the pirates still have no clue what it truly was. |
| “As I listened to the creaking timbers, it seemed to me that our ship was alive, breathing and sighing as she pitched in the ocean swell.” pg.42 | I love the author’s description of the ship floating at night. I can imagine what it sounds like. |
| Part B What if You Met… | |
| What did pirates do all day? They worked on sails all day and all night. Every time the wind changed the sails had to be changed. Some pirates slept and other worked until it was time to switch. Others repaired leaks and pumped out water. | My vision of pirates has totally changed reading these books and doing research. I thought they had it easy drinking rum all day but, they don’t they had to work hard! |
Section IV
Part A: Pirate Diary The Journey of Jake Carpenter
- Who were the colonists? Europeans who settled who established the North Carolina colony, a region in North America. They came to America for freedom of religion and cheap farmland.
- What are the Navigation Acts? A set of laws that forced the colonists to trade only with England using English ships and English crews.
- How did the colonists feel about Navigation Acts? They didn’t like it because it forced them to accept low prices for the goods they produced.
- Who were freebooters? They were mostly smugglers, supplying untaxed goods to grateful settlers on the coast of most ports. Some were financed by investment groups of businessmen who outfitted ships and bought letters of marque from dishonest officials.
- Describe the relationship between the colonists and the pirates. The colonists were scared of the pirates to an extent but, they also appreciated them because the pirates bought them stolen goods.
Part B: What If You Met A Pirate?
- What did you learn about the different kinds of pirates? I learned that all pirates had different jobs; they just didn’t sit around and drink. Just about every part of the ship had someone taking care of it. For example, there was someone in charge of the sails, they made and repaired sails. Cooper was the barrel make; Sparks was the vessel’s blacksmith.
- Out of all the pirates mentioned in this section, which ones do you find most interesting? Please explain why. I think I would like to be a part of the Seadogs because they had some support of the Queen. I would hope the Seadogs were punished like the pirates.

I think that your observations about the book ‘The Not so Jolly Roger’ are intriguing. Scieszka does place the reader in the center of the action, this allowed me to turn through pages quickly and read the book in less than an hour.
