After reading Text Talk, write a reflection on your blog and address the following:
In the article, Text Talk, what seem to be the most important points?
- Give children time to reflecti on what was read rather than expecting a quick answer.
- Give students the chance to share background knowledge inorder to help them understand what is going on in the story.
- Choose books that are challenging, that allow them to explore ideas and that help them explain ideas.
- Ask children questions about the pictures. Like “what’s happening?”
- select words throughout the story that can used in discussion, helps children expand their vocabulary
Summarize the key steps in planning and performing a Text Talk lesson.
I think the key steps in planning and performing are from table two in the article.
Selection of texts: pick stories that have structured events and different kinds of events so that children can build meaning.
Initial Questions: design an open questions that require children to describe or explain ideas instead of recalling information and remembering words.
Follow-up questions: questions that cause children to think deeper into the text and develop their own thoughts or ideas.
Pictures: Show pictures after you have read the text so that children can imagine on their own what is going on in the story.
Background Knowledge: students are invited to share what they know to build meaning and understanding
Vocabulary: teacher chooses a few words to discuss with students after the story is read to learn the meaning and how to use it.
Post this reflection on your blog.
